Chalkboard
    Old School turned Modern

First called blackboards, the chalkboard has been around for centuries. It was the invention of James Pillans who was the headmaster of a High School in Scotland. He came up with the board and the chalk to teach geography.

By 1801 the chalkboard was introduced to the United States, where it became tremendously popular in schoolhouses.

Since then the chalkboard has come a long way.  I've seen some trendy products out there which is either made with chalkboard, or other chalkboard-like materials. Of course this got me wondering what kinds of unique chalkboard products are out there. So off to Etsy I went where I found some really cool items.

This week all of my chosen items are either handmade.  Each item is numbered, and a direct link to each Etsy shop are listed below the collage, if you'd like to see more from a particular shop.

Enjoy!

this one's for the ladies!

Happy Mail!

I’ve been hearing a lot about happy mail recently, and decided to
research a bit as to what happy mail really is.  These days it’s rare
to receive something  fun and special in the mail.  Most of what
we receive are bills,  junk mail, and other boring things.  So the
thought of receiving something that would spread happiness
 is very appealing to me.

What I discovered is that generally happy mail is  sending/receiving
an item in the mail that is unlike anything you have ever sent/received
before.   The trick is anything 13 oz or less  you can just pop in the
mailbox.  No actual box/packaging needed!

Below are some amazing examples of what has been
sent/received in the mail successfully, as is!
 (Get ready to smile :)

Flip flops!

Bouncy balls!

Candy!

Next I’d like to announce my ingenious plan! I have decided to host
a Happy Mail Party!  This will work similar to chain letter mail, but
instead of  feeling dread, you will feel a surge
of  happiness and excitement!

The way this will work is that if you’d like to be involved,
send me an email with your name and address.  I know
some of you may not want to do this,
but I cannot think of another way.

Once I have enough people signed up I will write up a master
list with everyone’s names and addresses, going in the order
in which the emails were received.

Next I will begin by sending the first person on the list a
happy mail package, along with the list.  What the recipient will do
is cross off your name, make up a happy mail package for the next person on the list, and pop it in the mail.  And on and on!

The one rule is that you must take a photo of the happy mail you
have received (optional whether or not you'd like to be in the photo :)
and send it to me.  This way once everyone has received their
packages I can post the photos here!

Whose on board???

Be sure to stop by tomorrow to find out what theme I've chosen this week for my Fabulous Friday Finds post!  And beginning at noon my NO RULES Weekend Blog Party with Linky opens!

duct tape flip flop diy

I know it's a bit late in the season for a summery craft, but it's something I've been meaning to do with Autumn all season long. What prompted me to finally start this project was my awesome Target find
~ the prettiest duct tape ~
on CLEARANCE!

Another reason why I put this project off was the fact that I thought it would be difficult. Once Autumn becomes frustrated with a project, that's the end of it.

When I came home with the duct tape she was super excited, and I reluctantly gathered the other materials we needed, and set out not sure what to expect. I was hoping there wouldn't be tears, and that I'd have to finish the flip flops for her.

Surprisingly it really wasn't difficult at all for her.
The harder parts of the project were the ones where my
assistance was needed anyways. And the best part
of all was that they turned out really cute!!

What you need:
1 roll decorative duct tape
Corrugated cardboard (we used a pizza box)
Pencil
Good scissors
About 1hr of time

Step 1}
Grab a pair of flip flops or shoes
and trace onto corrugated cardboard

STEP 2}
Have an adult cut out the tracings

Step 3}
Cover the tops of the cutouts with your duct tape
folding edges under, But not fully covering the
backside as this will be done later

Step 4}
Place your foot on the cutouts and mark where the straps should go between your toes. Have an adult poke a smallish hole in this spot making sure it goes completely through the cardboard

Step 5}
Cut four 8-10” pieces of duct tape for the straps.
Fold each strip into thirds

Step 6}
Push two of the strips into the hole you made from
the top out through the bottom. duct tape the bottom
ends flat against the cardboard

Step 7}
Flip over to the top again and place foot on the cutout
to figure out where you want the straps to go over your foot.  Duct tape them in place just underneath the cardboard .
Trim off excess duct tape

Step 8}
Take a small piece of duct tape and wrap it around
the straps right where they come out of the hole on top.
This is the part that will go between your toes

Step 9}
Cover any remaining spaces with duct tape

Step 10}
Show all your friends your awesome creation,
they will be impressed ;)
