As we stood outside waiting for the school bus one cold morning last week, Autumn ran around commenting on the frosty coating upon everything. When she called out "look it's you!" I saw that she had drawn a little frosty picture of me on the windshield of the car.

As you can see I was smiling, and I have pretty eyelashes :)
It was so sweet I had to take a picture of it before it melted away...

I'm not sure how many out there will agree or disagree with me on this subject, but instead of writing a sappy post today I am taking a different approach.

As a child it is exciting to make and hand out valentine cards during class parties. And of course it's fun to eat candy and heart-shaped treats on Valentine's Day, but what about the other 364 days of the year?

It's important to show your love and appreciation for those close to you every day of the year. Of course it's sweet to give a Valentine's Day gift, but there shouldn't be such a importance placed upon it's "meaning". There is no gift out there that shows the depth of love. Does more expensive really equal more love? No, your everyday actions is what shows and proves your love.

Today instead of gifts my family will be receiving extra hugs and kisses, and an "I Love You". I believe that will get a smile and a give a warm heart.

... any sadness and heartbreak. If only it were that easy ~ Just "keep calm and eat a cupcake"!

With the popularity of all the different versions of the "keep calm" quotes, I couldn't resist creating a set of handmade cupcake toppers using this phrase.

They are not 100% finished, but my plan today is to complete them, and list them in my Etsy shop. I love their trendy shape, as well as the color combination of pink and black. Reminds me of a little ballerina.

Product Review

After my third child was born a little over eight years ago I was given a gift of a traditional 12x12 scrapbook along with a few supplies. Little did I know that this would blossom into a full-blown obsession for me. These days I have enough supplies to open my own store!

Slowly over the past few years I have become intrigued by the idea of digital scrapbooking, and digital design in general. It drove me crazy knowing that I could create these kinds of things myself rather than paying someone else to do it, and I set out to learn what I could accomplish on my own.

In my learning process I have completed a few different projects such as digital invites, digital cards, and my Etsy shop banner and avatar. I was not using any scrapbooking software, rather just locating different elements, etc. from across the web and using Photoshop. This became fun for me, but rather time-consuming.

This is when My Memories came into the picture with this wonderful offer. I would receive a free copy of their software to try out and review, and then I could host a giveaway for one of my readers to also win a copy! I was so excited to that I immediately accepted, downloaded the software, and began creating.

First off I decided to begin with a premade page template for this Christmas layout. This is the simplest, fastest way to create a page. All I needed to do was to chose the template (there are over 30), upload my photo, rearrange the elements, and it was done!

Next I decided to create a few of my own projects by selecting from the software's selection of papers (over 1,500), and elements (over 1,000). This process takes a bit longer only because there are so many choices! I could sit there all day rearranging and trying out all different papers and elements until I get the look I desire. The other night my friend surprised me with this sweet gift ~ an adorable mug with owls. She knows I have an obsession with owls, and when she saw this she immediately thought of me. Thank you Sherry!

Today Autumn and I are both feeling a bit under the weather. In order to do all that I need to do and get through this day I will be keeping this mug full of coffee, tea, or hot cocoa at all times :) The mug will make me smile, and the drink will warm me up and energize me.

last-minute valentine's day cards

There are those people who purchase their Valentine cards and gifts as soon as the Christmas items are packed away. Then there are others who wait until the last moment to make their purchases.

I am in the last category, unfortunately. I always feel as if I have all the time in the world to do what I have to do and then BOOM, the day arrives and I'm in a jam.

Yesterday I worked on a few last-minute handmade Valentine cards which I listed on eBay. My cards never turn out the way I envision them in the beginning. For these cards I envisioned lacy and romantic, but most of them turned out colorful and fun instead. Which isn't a bad thing, it's just funny how my natural "style" finds it's way into all I do.

who, whooooo loves owls???

If your anything like me you are probably all caught up in the owl craze! Everywhere you look there are owls on such items as clothing, home decor, crafts, and more.

A few years back when I first began making my owl softies, there were not all that many owl products on the market. Occasionally I'd see an owl on a shirt or something else, and that's when I fell in love with them.

More recently I've decided to combine the world's love of owls, with their love of cupcake toppers, and these little cuties below were created. This is a custom order which I've just completed for a baby shower being given by Erin K. {Thank you Erin!}

Pretty Pink Cupcakes, Yum!

Today is my daughter's 17th birthday party. A bunch of loved one's are coming over tonight for dinner, cake, and ice cream. As I take a break from baking and cooking I decided to quickly share photos of the jumbo cupcakes I make for her actual birthday which was Thursday.

Because it was a "special occasion" cupcake, I decided upon jumbo sized cakes! These are so easy to make because instead of lining a muffin pan with liners, you just purchase jumbo sized liners, place them on a cookie sheet, and fill them that way. The larger size keeps the mess under control as well.

Of course I had to top these off with fluffy pink frosting, pink sugar, and edible glitter :)

cupcake liner crafts!

I absolutely love cupcake liners, especially holiday themed ones. I'm not sure what it is about them exactly. I guess the number one reason would be that they are paper, and they have pretty patterns. Every holiday I buy a bunch of different cupcake liners in both regular and small sizes. Not because I plan on baking cupcakes, just because...!

Of course sometimes I do bake cupcakes for a party or just for fun, but most times I just save the liners. Silly I know, but when I saw cupcake liner crafts popping up on the internet, I knew this would be a great way to use up some of my stash.

First on my list was a cupcake liner garland. I thought this would be a great craft for my 8 year old to help with. Unfortunately after everything was all set up she lost patience, and I was left to my own devices.

The first garland I set out to make didn't turn out all that great. I loosely followed a tutorial I found online, but wished I had followed my own crafty instincts. So I then crafted two more garlands of my own designs, which turned out really pretty.

Now I'm tempted to use cupcake liners to create some handmade cards. Which means that I may need to buy some more liners :)

largest snowflake EVER!

I know that there's a record for almost everything imaginable. Since I was a child I have loved looking through the "Guiness Book of World Records" and being amazed by the facts.

Until this morning it never occured to me that there was a record for the largest snowflake! I've seen different sized snowflakes of course, but I believed that they could only get so big. Boy was I wrong!

This morning Google's homepage (you've probably already seen this yourself!) has one of their fancy doodles which they change up for holidays and other occasions. It's a cute little snowy scene which is animated with with a cow and some little birds. Then a giant snowflake comes and shakes things up.

Google is displaying this doodle because today is the 125th anniversary of the worlds largest recorded snowflake. Amazing! Of course I had to investigate this a bit further and found this fact on wikipedia:

"Largest snowflake ever observed: 38 centimeters (15 in) in diameter; Fort Keogh, Montana, United States, 1887-01-28."

Imagine!! Snowflakes a larger than a dinner plate! Of course there's no picture to go along with this amazing fact, but here are some other pretty snowflake photos I've found.

creative chaos

Since I like to share my creative projects here, I thought I'd share a quick sneak peek at my workspace. No it's not pretty, but it works. What started as just a table, a chair, and a few supplies, has blossomed into a takeover of an entire corner of the basement.

It's a nice cozy spot right next to a window, but yes it does need some organizing. Ok, not just some organizing but a complete overhaul! The problem is I'm so busy creating that I hate to stop to organize. Especially when I know where everything is, and it works for me.

Of course someday I'd love to have a little room I can call my own. I think about this sometimes. How I would organize everything. I've seen so many photos of neatly organized areas, and I'm not sure I could ever be that way. All visually appealing and color coordinated. But we'll see. You never know right? Miracles do happen :)

With all the activity around here it's taken me awhile to get these cute little owls listed for sale, but they are now available on eBay. I love how even though I use the same patterns each time I make one of them, they always turn out with their own unique look, or "expression".

weekend blues

Around here my family normally has the Monday blues. Not to say that we still didn't, but the weekend was a little heartbreaking. Autumn ended up in the emergency room with a broken collarbone. When we received the news she became all teary-eyed, and I felt absolutely awful for her.

Amazingly she's not in much pain, even though we were told this is a painful injury. She spent the remainder of the weekend in her pj's, and her grandparents stopped by with a little treat for her ~ a big chocolate lollipop which I let her eat all at once cause that's the kind of mom I am :)

Hopefully 4-6 weeks from now this will all be a distant memory.

For awhile now I've been going back and forth between yes and no. Yes because I think it's such a fun idea, and a great way to meet new blogger friends. No because I'm a bit nervous as to how this whole thing works, and I'd hate to mix something up and have someone mad at me.

I've researched a bit about giveaways online, and came across a blog where the author wrote an entire post as to why she will never do a giveaway. Mostly due to needing very specific rules, and some states even have laws regarding giveaways??? This kind of scared me a bit.

Nevertheless I am still intrigued by the idea of hosting a giveaway, and even have my first item picked out.

One of my favorite websites to go to for crafty inspiration is "Little Odd Forest". This isn't a craft website, but rather a site that sells "forest, fairytales and wanderlust inspired creations for all mankind". This is the term designer Linda Lye of Forestprints Design from Singapore, uses to describe her style.

I love to browse the internet looking for ordinary items that have a unique twist. What do I mean by this? A unique twist is something that makes an ordinary everyday item more fun to use, and or look at.

Today I began my search starting with handbags when I accidentally stumbled upon the cutest push-pins I have ever seen. How I went from handbags to push-pins I don't really know, but when I clicked on this photo I knew right away that I absolutely loved these!

The above push pins are sold through Anthropologie, and are called Pinwheel Push Pins. My second thought after I saw these was that I just had to have them, but then my third thought was that I bet I could make these! And sure enough I found a tutorial right away on the blog "Sew Homegrown" written by Jessica. This is what her version looks like:

too early for spring fever?

Once the holidays are behind us I dread going through the rest of winter here in New England. All those cold and snowy days when I have to wade through knee-deep snow to go dig out my car in the blinding cold. Well it's not always that bad, but this winter so far has not even come close to being snowy whatsoever!

We had a little snow just before Halloween, and since then pretty much nothing. So little in fact that I am beginning to feel like spring is right around the corner. I feel that at any moment there will be leaves sprouting on the trees, the grass will be turning back to green, and I can go back to wearing my flip-flops.

But this is a problem as we still have at least three months where it is possible for a snowstorm. So yes, it is too early for me to have spring fever!

This morning I took a few photos with my phone which show the temporarily drab, dreary landscape of my hometown. It's a whole other world in the spring. So, I need to keep reminding myself that spring is not yet "right around the corner" (unless of course we do end up with snow), but eventually there will be hope.

Red Velvet Whoopie Pies!

In my family "Whoopie Pies" were a common dessert that we loved as kids, and still love today. You may ask "what is a Whoopie Pie?". I've read a bit about how in different parts of the United States this dessert is also called "Moon Pies", and in some parts of the US they are unheard of. As for other countries, I'm curious as to whether or not these even exist??

Anyways, regular "Whoopie Pies" are little chocolate cakes the size of a cookie, or larger if desired. You mix the batter, bake little circles of the batter on cookie sheets, and then fill them with a creamy filling similar to buttercream frosting, but with fluff added to the mix.

Over the holidays I wanted to make something not just special, but kid-friendly as well. I started brainstorming ideas such as a "Red Velvet Cake" or cupcakes. Then I wondered if there was a recipe out there for "Red Velvet Whoopie Pies", and sure enough there was.

I located a good recipe that did not call for a boxed cake mix to be used, as most of the other recipes I found did. It was a bit of a risk making something semi-new for a holiday, but I decided to take a chance and the results were fantastic. They were so yummy in fact that I decided to share the recipe :)

Red Velvet Whoopie Pies

Adapted from Grouprecipes.com

Makes approx. 60) 1", 42) 2", or 24) 3"

Cake Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/4 tsp. salt

1/2 cup butter, softened

1 cup packed brown sugar

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla

1/2 cup buttermilk

1) 1 oz. bottle red food coloring (2 Tbsp.)

Cake Directions

1) Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease two cookie sheets. Set aside.

2) In a medium bowl combine flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

3) In a large mixing bowl beat butter on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Beat in brown sugar til light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk, beating well after each addition, but until just combined. Stir in food coloring.

4) Spoon batter onto cookie sheets in 1" or 2" diameter rounds, leaving 1" between each. (If you'd like them a bit larger you can go up to 3", but you won't have as many.)

5) Bake 7-9 minutes for 1" sizes, 9-11 for 2" sizes, and estimate timing for larger sizes, all until tops are set.

6) Carefully remove from baking sheets and cool on racks.

Filling Ingredients

1/4 cup butter, softened

4 oz. cream cheese, softened

1) 7 oz. jar marshallow cream

2-4 cups confectionary sugar

Filling Directions

7) In a medium mixing bowl beat butter and cream cheese until smooth. Fold in marshmallow cream.

8) This is where I made an adjustment to the filling recipe; Add 2-4 cups of confectionary sugar, or until filling is of desired consistency.

9) To fill, dollop filling on the flat sides of half of the cakes, and top with remaining cakes, flat sides down.

Enjoy!

new year, new goals

I'm the kind of person who makes a bunch of resolutions each year, but then never really put any sort of plan into motion. Each year I say to myself "this year will be different", but it never is. Therefore, my resolution this year will be to try hard to follow through on any goals I set for myself. This may sound a little silly, and a bit too general, but I need a different approach this year.

I won't bore you with the specific details of all of my goals. (Besides I like to keep them a secret anyways :) What I will tell you is that one of my goals is to improve my Etsy shop. I feel I need for more of a direction, and more defined sections within the shop.

Part of my shop description includes the term "Scrapbooking, Papercrafts & Other Random Goodies!" I do love that description, but I may need a change. In the coming months I'll be brainstorming new ideas, thinking of new products, and continuing with the items which my customers really like.

As I mentioned in a previous post I would be working on adding more owl softies to my shop. Since these have been so popular, I decided this would be a good place to start.

I have begun making a bunch of the smaller sized owls, some with a Valentine theme. These should be available next week.

And I guess my second New Year's goal is right on display here, so I might as well mention it! I need to reorganize and neaten up my studio area. This will be a large project.

So this coming year will be busy, hopefully with many positive changes.

If I were asked to chose one celebrity whose style I admire, I would chose Zooey Deschanel, hands down!

I'm not the biggest fashion person out there, but when I see a particular style I know right away if I like it or not. Zooey's style is kinda retro-pretty and unique.
Here are some photos of Zooey in some amazing clothes from jeans to dresses.

If I were able to throw out all of my clothes and start over, Zooey would definately be my inspiration in reinventing my wardrobe.

Meet the newest addition to our household ~ "Lizzy" the Bearded Dragon. This is what Santa brought for Autumn's big gift this year. It (I call it "it" because we won't know if it's a boy or a girl til it grows bigger.)spends most of it's time in an aquarium with sand and warming lights. It eats live crickets. It makes eye contact.

I don't know what I think of it yet myself, but Autumn absolutely loves it.

Ta da! Here is the reveal of my favorite Christmas cookie of all time ~ Candy Cane Cookies!

I'm not sure if I love these as much as I do because my grandmother would make them every year when I was a child, because they are so cute, or because they are delicious. In any case, these cookies come out on top as my absolute favorites.

Below I've posted the recipe. As you can see they don't have to be perfectly formed, as it is pretty much impossible to do. (Although somehow my grandmother was able to get them perfect.)

Anyways, a couple tips I have to offer would be to keep a damp paper towel over each bowl of dough as your making the shapes to keep things moist, and to leave yourself plenty of time to make them.

Candy Cane Cookies

Ingredients:

1 cup shortening or 1/2 cup butter

1 cup sifted confectionary sugar

1 egg

1-1/2 tsp. almond extract

1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups flour

1 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. red food coloring

1/2 cup sugar

Heat oven to 350 degrees

Mix shortening (or butter) sugar, egg and flavorings thoroughly.

Measure flour, mix with salt ~ stir into shortening (butter) mixture

Divide dough in half ~ blend food coloring into one half

On a lightly floured board roll a 4" strip using tsp dough from each color

Place strips side-by-side, press lightly together and twist like a rope

For best results complete one cookie at a time, keeping the moist paper towels over the remaining dough

Place on ungreased cookie sheet, curve top to form handle of cane

Bake about 9 minutes or until lightly browned

While still warm sprinkly with sugar

Makes approx. 4 dozen

What would your reaction be if while you were shopping at the mall a lovely woman in a pretty pink dress began to sing a Christmas song, loudly, as she rode up the escalator? Maybe you'd think she was just being extra festive?

What if a large group of women all wearing the same color dresses, joined together with this woman and put on a beautiful performance of "Home for the Holiday's"? Right in the middle of the mall?

I've never seen anything like it, but it actually happened to the surprised shoppers at a Chicago mall, and you can see it play out below. Just watch the shoppers reactions. Some look confused, while others join in and sing along.

If you weren't in a festive mood before, you certainly will be after watching this :)

Yay, I've completed three more batches of Christmas cookies!

Yesterday was my biggest baking day so far. I completed sugar cookies, Russian Teacakes (although I like to call them "Snowballs"), and Chocolate Bon~Bons.

Today I will make my final batch of cookies which I will post tomorrow, along with the recipe. What are they? Stop by tomorrow to find out! They are my most favorite and I can't wait to share :)

I've finally begun my holiday baking beginning with these little goodies above. One batch never seems to be enough, so of course I made a double-batch. It's difficult to keep everyone away from them while they are cooling, and a bunch are already missing!

The best it yet to come though. My favorite holiday cookies are one's that my grandmother would make for us every year. Not only do they bring back many memories for me, but they are delicious, AND cute!

Over the next few days I will be sharing more cookies photos, as well as the recipe for my favorites that I mentioned above. So back to the kitchen I go to become covered in flour from head to toe.

planning for the new year

As the year 2011 begins to wind down many of us start thinking of what we can do to improve our lives. Whether it be projects that need to be completed, organizing, eating healthier and/or exercising, or just managing your life as a whole, there's likely something you will add to your list.

While browsing online this morning, I came across a new blog I've begun reading. It is written by Crystal Wilkerson, a designer. She makes lovely digital designs, which is what first attracted me to her blog. She has also designed two patterned paper collections for Echo Park Paper Company.

So, how does Crystal's blog relate to improving your life? Well, last year Crystal designed a 2011 Planner like none other I have ever seen. This is not just a planner with calendars, times etc., but rather a planner for improving every aspect of your life, down to the little details such as "places to go and people to see".

Thankfully Crystal is coming out with a 2012 Planner which I must have! Here are a few photos from Crystal's blog which is a sneak peek of this downloadable planner, which has a tentative sale date of December 28.

what a project ~ making gingerbread houses from scratch. If you haven't done this before it's really not that difficult to do, it just takes allll day.

There are many steps involved before you are even close to decorating, but it is worth it. Mixing, rolling, cutting, baking, cooling, glueing together, setting, and then finally hours later . . . decorating.

This has turned into a tradition in my home by accident. One year I purchased a gingerbread house kit and thought it would be easier and cheaper to make the entire thing myself. The following year I did just that, to prove that I could actually do this, and it was so much more fun that using the premade kits.

So how did this turn into a tradition? Any holiday activity that my youngest enjoys, she assumes we will continue this same activity year after year. And me being me, I always go along with it. I mean it's the holidays after all!

Today is Christmas card day! I've designed my own card in Photoshop, which I admit I'm not all that good at. I think it turned out cute, except the photo filter I chose came out a bit darker than I would have liked.

Designing my own cards has started me thinking about digital scrapbooking. I have only scrapbooked traditionally, but digital seems like it would be fun too :)

Here's my card with my three kids who I tricked into thinking I just wanted a quick pic of them by this tree ;)

My favorite style of Christmas ornament has to be retro, or vintage. I just love the details, colors, and crafty glitterness (I know that's not a word, but I made it work :)

I also love the fact that these types of ornaments bring back memories of Christmas's past, such as large get-togethers with family members who now have families of their own, or have passed away.

I wish I could claim the ornaments I've shown below as my own, but this is just sort of a wish list.

Right now my tree is full of hand-me-down or gifted ornaments, one's my kids made in school, with a few newer one's I've bought. One day I plan to have a tree full of retro ornaments. Then I can be a kid again :) Or at least pretend!

I spent this afternoon finishing up a custom order for fire truck birthday invites. They turned out super cute and I thought I'd share. I've removed some of the personal details from the photo for privacy purposes, but you can still get the full effect :)

I love when I receive a custom order for something that I have never made before, such as these adorable invites. At first I try to envision what I'd like the end result to be, and they usually turn out completely different than that vision. Which is not a bad thing at all :)

Yesterday afternoon we attended Taryne's holiday piano recital. Normally she is very nervous, but this time around she was feeling more confident. I was even able to get a few nice photos of her {which is not an easy task to do with all the goofy faces she loves to make}.

Here are two of the best photos from the bunch~

The theme for this years recital was "Going to the Movies". Each student chose a song from a movie they enjoyed as their recital piece. During their performances photos were shown from their movie, which was a nice touch.

The movie Taryne chose was "The Little Mermaid", and the song was "Part of Your World". It turned out beautifully, and I am very proud of her. Way to go Taryne!

weekend project

This weekend's project is to complete a custom order for 25 fire truck birthday invitations.
Here's a sneak peak at how their turning out.

Their going to resemble the front portion of the fire truck. So far I have the base of the invites cut out, the "windows" have all the important info printed on them, and they are adhered to the base. Now on to the details!

Once their complete I will post more pics here.

elf on the shelf

Since this creepy little guy (ok he is kinda of cute :) is such a big part of our lives right now, I thought I'd take a moment to write about him. Actually more so about the entire tradition that he's created.

Three years ago Autumn's class at school had an "Elf on the Shelf", and she talked about him so much that I decided we must have one at home. If you unsure as to what he is all about I'll give you a quick lesson.

You purchase an "Elf on the Shelf" kit which includes a special box where the elf and the accompanying book are stored. You then choose a name for your elf and register him online at the North Pole. The book tells you all the specifics such as how the elf keeps an eye on the childs behavior, and how each night he returns to the North Pole to report to Santa what he's seen. When the elf returns to your home he will appear in a new location, which your child will search for when they wake.

I have to say this purchase was well worth all the memories and happy moments it has created for my daughter. The elf is the first thing she thinks about when she wakes, and before she falls asleep. The elf also helps a bit with behavior, as you can remind your child that their elf is watching, and will be reporting directly to Santa later on that night.

If you have children and have not purchased your "Elf on the Shelf" I highly recommend doing so. It's a fun, easy, and memorable tradition.

The other night Autumn decided she wanted to see Santa. As we stood in line she grew more and more nervous. I was afraid she was going to change her mind at the last minute, but I think that she wants her Christmas wish to come true so badly she figured she needed to go through with it.

When her turn came, she nervously sat on Santa's lap and told him what she'd like for Christmas ~ an iPod Touch. Now Santa doesn't know what to do. Santa hadn't planned on bringing her an iPod Touch. Does an 8 year old need one for themselves? She was so brave sitting on Santa's lap and talking to him, and may believe that doing so will guarantee Santa will bring one for her.

Hmmm I have a feeling that Santa may just have to grant this one wish.

slumber party time

Doesn't this sleeping bag just make you wanna snuggle up by the Christmas tree with a cup of hot cocoa? Unfortunately it's not people-sized, but much cuter ~ it's a doll-sized sleeping bag I just finished making.

It turned out super cute, and I've decided that I am going to take custom orders for Christmas gifts. They are made to fit American Girl Dolls, or any 18" doll. (FYI I noticed that the American Doll Girl sleeping bags are now "sold out" on their website.) I love to use unique and colorful fabrics which makes them really fun!

Cupcakes to die for !

Choosing which dessert to make for a holiday is always a tough decision. There are so many yummy things to pick from. For Thanksgiving dessert this year I decided upon Black Bottom Cupcakes. They are chocolately, but not overly sweet. The taste was described by my relatives as "to die for". So today I've decided to share my recipe with you :)

Black Bottom Cupcakes

1 6oz. package of cream cheese, softened
1/3 C sugar
1 egg
1 6oz. package (1 cup) semi-sweet chocolate chips
1-1/2 C all purpose flour
1 C sugar
1/4 C unsweetened cocoa
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 C water
1/3 C oil
1 tbsp vinegar
1 tsp vanilla

Heat oven to 350 F. Line 18 muffin cups with paper baking cups. In small bowl combine cream cheese, 1/3C sugar and egg, mix well. Stir in chocolate chips, set aside.

In a large bowl combine flour, 1 cup sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Add water, oil, vinegar and vanilla. Beat 2 minutes on medium speed. Fill each paper-lined cup half full. Top each with 1 tbsp of cream cheese mixture.

Bake at 350F for 20-30 minutes, or until cream cheese mixture is light golden brown. Cool 15 minutes and remove from pans. Cool completely then store in refrigerator.

Enjoy!

Occasionally I may chose a product to review, and normally I'll pick something that I love such as clothing or handmade products. Something that excites me. Never did I think I would review a mop, but this was a must!! A

Last week I decided we needed a new mop for the kitchen floor. Living in a house with three kids, one man, and two cats I am in need of a mop that works really well.

When I saw that Proctor and Gamble, the maker's of the "Magic Eraser", had come out with a "Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Mop" I bought it without hesitation. Knowing how well magic erasers work I knew I had to try this mop.

The slogan on the packaging states "for sparking clean floors", and boy does this mop deliver on that promise. The padding held up well to vigorous scrubbing, and picked up grime that I didn't even know was there. There is a dramatic difference in how my kitchen floor looked before mopping, and after. I have to say I've never seen it this clean.

So my conclusion is that YES, I highly recommend this product. If you purchase this mop I assure you it will definately work it's "magic" on your floors too.

My second to last post which was about cake pops was supposed to be my last fall project for the season. Then I figured why not make up two more sets of my "Thankful" place setting cards? These were popular items in my Etsy shop last fall, and I only had time to make one other set this fall, which has already sold on eBay.

Living in The Land of the Mixed Up Seasons

When I was younger living in New England meant four seasons with a beginning and an end. Each season had its own special magic ~ colorful leaves in the fall, snow in the winter, tulips in the spring, and heatwaves in the summer.

During the last 15 or so years things have changed. It seems as if the seasons have shifted, and at times become completely mixed up. The weather this fall has proven just that.

October 29, 2011 we had a little snowstorm. The problem was all those beautiful, colored leaves were still on the trees. Why was this a problem? It made all the branches so heavy that many broke right off the trees taking power lines with them. Most everyone lost power, some for weeks. And for the first time in my life trick-or-treat was postponed.

I believe everyone now has their power back, and we are enjoying a sunny day in the 60's. Shorts today, winter jackets tomorrow? You never know in New England...

Fall Fun...Cake Pops & More!

Awhile back I shared some photos of cake pops, and my desire to make some of my own. The Fall season has finally given me a reason to make a batch, and test this process out. It was not too difficult to do, and I think mine turned out pretty cute.

First off I made a batch of pumpkin cake pops, for the Fall Festival at my daughter Autumn's school. I followed the instructions to a tee, which recommended using a boxed cake and canned frosting. Normally I prefer homemade, but figured I should stick to the directions on my first attempt.

After baking, cooling and crumbling the cake I was ready to begin. The process was very simple, but time consuming. Add frosting to the crumbled cake and mix well. Roll into 1" balls and refrigerate for 30 mins. Prepare a piece of styrofoam to stick your pops into once complete. Melt your coating, stick in your lollipop sticks, and then dip the balls in turning to cover completely. Lastly I stuck I green tic-tac in the top of the pop for the pumpkin stem, and then inserted into the styrofoam to set. At this point you could use an edible marker to draw on faces, but I stuck with regular pumpkins.
Finished results~ adorable, but extremely sugary-sweet.

For my second attempt I created cake balls rather than pops, using my own homemade cake and frosting recipes. I wanted these to look like creepy eyeballs for Autumn's class Halloween party. For display I placed the balls in mini Halloween themed cupcake papers.

To my surprise these were just as easy to put together. The only difference here was you need to drop the balls into the coating, and use a spoon to swirl it around till covered. Lastly I added a lifesaver mint to complete the eyeball.

Well these eyeballs weren't perfect, but they were still a hit at the party.

I know it's been awhile since my last post, but I have been busy working on making changes and improvements to my Etsy shop, Twitter, Facebook Fanpage, etc.

I wanted to redesign it all myself, and I hate asking for help, so it took awhile to complete this project. The other issue is that I am far from ever becoming a computer expert, but I love the results.

The changes include redesigning the banners and avatars on my accounts so they coordinate, as well as to rename them.

Yesterday I learned of a brand new website which may revolutionize the way we choose our books. It is still being developed, but I think it is amazing and I would personally use it all the time. The site is called booklamp.org, and they explain what the site does in the following quoted paragraph:

"BookLamp.org is the result of an exploratory project intended to help you find new books by comparing the content of the books themselves, similar to the way that Pandora.com matches music lovers to new music. We're attempting to help you find books with similar themes and writing style to books you've enjoyed in the past - comparing elements like Description, Pacing, Density, Perspective, and Dialog - while at the same time allowing you to specify details like... more Medieval Weapons."

If you love to read, why not visit this site yourself and test it out. The developers are looking for publishers willing to work with them on this project, as well feedback etc. This all may just be worth your time :)

the yummiest blueberry muffins EVER!

Remember the store Jordan Marsh? Some of them had little bakeries where they sold yummy cupcakes and muffins etc. Well from somewhere, my grandmother had a Jordan Marsh blueberry muffin recipe which I've been using now for years. I'm not sure if it's the actual recipe, or a variation, but these muffins are absolutely delicious. So delicious in fact that I had to share it with you :)

Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins

{ Makes 12 }

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter softened

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups flour

2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 cup milk

2 tsp. sugar for tops

Directions:

On slow speed cream butter with sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and mix until well blended.

Sift dry ingredients together (I skip the sifting) and add to egg and butter mixture alternating with milk.

Mash 1/2 cup blueberries and stir into mixture by hand. Add rest of blueberries whole stirring by hand.

Grease muffin tins well with butter (grease top surface of pan as well). Pile mixture high in each muffin cup and sprinkle sugar over tops.

Bake 375 deg. for 30 mins.

*note the photo above shows a smaller version of the muffin. When following the recipe as directed above your muffins will be nice and big.

try, try again

I have to say I am extremely disappointed at the outcome of sales at my table on Saturday, outside of Handcrafter's Hall. Originally I was going to set up in the entrway of the store, but I was allowed to set up right by the sidewalk instead. I was super excited as there was tons of foot traffic, and many people stopped by my table. But as the day wore on it became obvious that things were not going as planned. What I did come away with was a sunburn, and the realization that selling online in my Etsy shop appears to be the best way to go lol. http://www.pjmdesigns.etsy.com/

Here are some photos of my table which I took right after I set everything up. I have to say that since I am not one to give up I would still be willing to try to sell at another type of venue. But we'll see :)

I think I'm going to begin thinking about starting work on some fall/holiday items this week. My most popular of these types of items include Halloween cards, and my "Thankful" place setting cards for Thanksgiving.

Happy Saturday! Today will be a very busy day here. I'm all set up to go down to Handcrafter's Hall in Newburyport, MA to set up a table in the entryway of the store. This is a wonderful opportunity for artisans as they are the first display customers will see when they enter the store. I hope to get a few pictures to share tomorrow :)

Normally I am all for chocolate desserts, cookies, cakes, cupcakes etc., but while browsing through blogs the other day I inadvertantly found a recipe for "Blackberry Pie Bars". Something about this recipe made me feel like I HAD to make these.

I found some nice big blackberries and began baking, unsure of what the outcome would be. With me it could go either way ~ good or bad :) I have to say the results were so delicious that I decided I must share this amazing recipe!

Blackberry Pie Bars

adapted from Rebecca Rather, The Pastry Queen

Crust and Topping

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups sugar

1/4 tsp salt

1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter, chilled

Fruit Filling

4 large eggs

2 cups sugar

1 cup sour cream

3/4 cup flour

pinch salt

zest of 1/2 lemon
1 tsp almond extract
2 (16-oz) packages frozen blackberries, thawed and drained {I used fresh}

To make the crust and topping, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.

Combine the flour, sugar, and salt in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse a few times to mix. Cut the butter into 1/2-inch cubes, and add to the flour mixture. Process until the butter is evenly distributed but the mixture is still crumbly, 30-60 seconds.

Reserve 1 1/2 cups of the mixture to use as the topping. Press the remaining mixture into the bottom of the pan, and bake 12-15 minutes. Cool for at least 10 minutes.

To make the filling, whisk the eggs in a large bowl, then add the sugar, sour cream, flour, salt, lemon zest, and almond extract. Gently fold in the berries and spoon the mixture over the crust. Sprinkle the remaining flour mixture evenly over the filling, and bake 45 to 55 minutes.

Cool at least 1 hour before cutting into bars, or scoop out of the pan to serve cobbler-style.

I don't know whether these are a new creation, or if they've been around forever, but I just discovered them a few months ago. At first it seemed like a cool idea for someone whose into that sort of stuff, but after looking at pictures of what you can do with them, I have become completely obsessed!!! (And I know I say that a lot, but I really mean it this time :)

What am I talking about?? C A K E P O P S !!!

From what I've read so far you bake a 9x13 sized cake, crumble it all up into a bowl, mix in frosting, shape the mixture into balls, insert a lollipop stick, freeze for a bit, then decorate! And when I mean decorate take a look at these examples below!

I now need to find an excuse to make 40-50 of these little treats (thats how many one cake will yield).

If you'd like to try making a batch of these yourself there are plenty of recipes and instructions online. You can also visit Amazon where there is a bunch of books available to choose from, for complete instructions and pictures for design ideas ~ Cake Pops Books!

If I decide to go ahead and attempt these I will share photos, tips, etc.!!

among the clouds

Photo sharing time :) Here are a few photos from my recent trip up Mt. Washington in NH, the state in which I live. The drive up and down the mountain is pretty scary, but the views are amazing. My daughter Autumn especially loved being "in the clouds" :)
